Castel Sant'Angelo: frequently asked questions

Is this the official Castel Sant'Angelo website?

No. Castel Sant'Angelo Visit is an independent visitor guide. The official information is on the website of the Direzione Musei nazionali della città di Roma and on the Ministry of Culture's page. We are not the museum and we do not run it. The tickets and tours featured here are sold by our partner Tiqets, a third party, not by the museum. Official full price: 18 €; entry with an audio guide app via Tiqets: 22 € at the time of writing.

What are the opening hours? Is it open on Mondays?

Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 19:30, with the last entry at 18:30. It is closed on Mondays, on 25 December and on 1 January, except extraordinary openings. On Monday 2 November and Monday 7 December 2026 it opens from 14:00 to 20:00 (last entry 19:00). For 24 and 31 December the museum has published nothing. Hours read on 24 October 2026.

How much is a ticket, and do children pay?

Official price: the full ticket is 18 € since 1 July 2026, 2 € for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, and free for under-18s and other cases set by law. The museum changes prices on some event days, and we could not read whether booking online adds a fee, so check the final amount on the sales channel. Tiqets lists entry with an audio guide app at 22 € at the time of writing. Read the terms of what you buy.

Do I need to book in advance?

The Ministry of Culture's page calls booking optional, and the museum recommends it every day, especially on holidays and weekends. On the museum's page, tickets for October, November and December 2026 are on sale; we found nothing about sales from January 2027. On free days there is no online booking.

Is the ticket in my name? What ID do I need?

Yes, for tickets bought online or by call centre: you must show the ticket and an original ID document, and if the details do not match the document, entry is refused with no refund. One change of name is allowed, by midnight of the day before. For a ticket bought through Tiqets, it is not confirmed that the ticket carries your name: bring an original ID document and read the instructions you receive after buying. The museum's rules above are written for its own sales channels.

Is entry free on the first Sunday of the month?

Yes. The first Sunday of every month is free, with no online booking: you collect a free ticket at the desk, in one queue, and the museum may reshape the route. Wednesday 4 November 2026 is also a free opening, from 9:00 to 19:30. The Passetto di Borgo cannot be visited on the first Sunday.

What are the “Lunedì di Castello”?

Afternoon openings on the first Monday of the month, normally a closing day: 14:00 to 20:00, last entry 19:00, special ticket 5 €, sold only on site, no booking, no groups. The ones left in 2026 are Monday 2 November and Monday 7 December. Nothing is announced for 2027.

What is the Passetto di Borgo and how do I visit it?

It is the raised, fortified corridor linking the Vatican to the castle, built for the popes' escape. It opens only on guided tours sold apart from the ticket: Friday to Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00 (with entry to the castle included, except on the first Sunday), Saturday evening from 19:00 to 23:00, and easier-access visits on the second and fourth Sunday at 10:45 and 12:15. Prices and length are not confirmed by the official pages we could read.

Can I go up to the Terrace of the Angel or see the prisons?

We cannot say. The museum's website shows the Terrazza dell'Angelo, the prisons and the Loggia di Giulio II among its photos or in its virtual tour, but it does not state whether or when they are open on a normal visit. Check with the museum before you count on them.

Can I take a backpack inside? Are animals allowed?

There is no cloakroom: the Ministry of Culture's page says it cannot be used, and the museum says the service is not provided. The size of bags allowed is not stated. Animals are not allowed. The museum's pages do not say anything on food or photos, so look for signs.

Can I change a ticket or get a refund?

The museum's pages say only that a ticket whose details do not match the ID document gets no refund, and that one change of name is allowed. We could not read the sellers' refund policies. For Tiqets, the tickets on our cards are not refundable or changeable, according to Tiqets: read the page of the one you choose.

Is Castel Sant'Angelo accessible?

The museum writes that access is limited to a partial use of the outdoor spaces for visitors with disabilities, and that works to improve accessibility are under way. We found no official word on lifts or stairs inside. The Passetto di Borgo has easier-access visits on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. Contact the museum before you go.
